ORGANIZERS and race officials of the upcoming Run for a Child’s Future gathered at the Wineshop yesterday to launch the fun run slated April 24.
The race will start and end at the APM Mall along A. Soriano Avenue at the North Reclamation Area and will have 3-, 6- and 12-kilometer distances.
The Easter Sunday race is spearheaded by the Child Health Information Leaders for Development and Reforms Network Incorporated (CHILDREN Inc.). Heading yesterday’s launching were race director Joel Baring and CHILDREN Inc. founders Myla Micaros and Glendo Lauron.
The organizers are hoping to raise funds that will help dozens of qualified children in their schooling. The group looks to provide the children’s needs until they graduated from the course they choose.
"People will join this race because they also are willing to help us reach our goal to help children," said CHILDREN Inc. press and media relations officer Bong Roxas.
Organizers are hoping to attract 1,500 runners for the race, which starts 5:30 a.m.
The running event was originally scheduled for February. But after the Cebu City Sports Commission decided to regulate running events in Cebu City, the race was moved.
Although the starting point will be new for runners, the route will be familiar for some. The race route brings runners through Juan Luna Avenue. The 3k turning point will be infront the Carmelite Monastery while the 6k turning point will be somewhere near JY Square Mall in barangay Lahug. 12k runners will have to pass through Salinas Drive, Gorordo Avenue, Escario Street all the way to Osmeña Boulevard. Their turning point will be in an intersection near Joven's Grill.
Cash prizes are at stake for the top placers in the three categories. Registration fee is pegged at P250 inclusive of the race packet and snacks after the race. Registreation sites are at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) office inside the Cebu City Sports Center and at the RUNNR at the Ayala Center Cebu. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
